Erik Odijk

'Ambient Three'

Erik Odijk creates drawings in his studio and at exhibition venues, where he works directly on the wall. His work features nature as the protagonist, as he travels through the wild landscapes and returns to the experience of the place in his drawings. The drawn landscapes are both beautiful and untamed, with a layered drawing style that captures the slow grip of time on nature. Odijk's formal style is reminiscent of the hallucinatory lines in Jan Toorop's landscapes from the Symbolism period. He portrays the vitality and darkness of nature in his work, infused with the idea that experiencing nature is an irrepressible thrill that is increasingly difficult to access in the modern era. As a result, photography occupies a more significant role in his current work, with Odijk compiling photo series of his journeys through landscapes to introduce an objective view of the experience of the place. The photographs serve as an extension of his research into the natural experience in the 21st century, forming a counterpoint to the drawings.
